Instagram Insights Limitations

The Instagram Insights connector has a number of limitations tied to the Instagram API and Meta's policies. All significant limitations are listed below.

Account Types

Supported Types

Account TypeSupportMetricsDemographics
BusinessFullAllAll (with 100+ followers)
CreatorFullMostLimited
PersonalNo

Important: personal accounts are not supported at all. You must switch to Business or Creator.

How to Switch Account Type

  1. Instagram Settings → Account
  2. Scroll down → "Switch account type"
  3. Select "Professional account"
  4. Choose a category (Business or Creator)

An Instagram Business/Creator account must be linked to a Facebook Page:

  • Without a link, the account doesn't appear in me/accounts
  • The link is configured in Instagram settings or Facebook Page Settings

Rate Limits

General Limits

Instagram Insights uses the Instagram Graph API, which has its own limits:

  • Overall rate limit: depends on the Meta app's tier
  • Limits on the /insights endpoint are usually stricter than for basic requests
  • Exceeding the limit returns HTTP 429 or throttle codes (similar to Meta Ads)

Recommendations

  • Don't request data more often than once an hour
  • For multiple accounts, spread requests out evenly
  • Rely on caching on the LightLead side

Data Thresholds

Minimum Follower Count

ThresholdWhich metrics it affects
0impressions, reach, profile_views, website_clicks
100+audience_gender_age, audience_country, audience_city

Reasons for the Thresholds

Meta hides demographic data for small audiences for privacy reasons. With fewer than 100 followers, there's a risk of deanonymizing individual users.

Update Delay

Data TypeDelay
Basic metrics (impressions, reach)24-48 hours
Demographic data48-72 hours
Follower data24 hours
Today's dataUnavailable

Key difference: Instagram Insights is not real-time data. All metrics have a delay of at least 24 hours.

Takeaway: demographic data is only available as a lifetime aggregate.

Behavioral Notes

Account Deletion and Recovery

  • Temporarily disabling an account preserves the data
  • Permanently deleting an account loses the data
  • When switching Personal → Business, historical data is not available

Changing the Username

  • Changing the username doesn't affect access to data
  • The account ID remains unchanged
